  • A Look Inside a GAS IT Horizontal Vapour Tank

Every GAS IT Refillable gas tank is packed full of many unique safety features, so please don't assume all red vapour tanks, or all vapour tanks sold in the UK are the same or even legal. GAS IT specify their own high quality valves and equipment.

Firstly their GAS IT tanks are made of the highest quality steel and external coatings and comply with the current EU and UK regulations and comes from the well proven tank manufacturers in Europe.

They source and fit the best Europea,  top quality safety valves, again all marked and complying with all EC and UK regulations. All of the GAS IT horizontal tanks are fitted with their own choice of 4 separate valves, covered by a high quality aluminium housing.

    1) The gas inlet valve known as a 80% shut off valve, is there so when the tank is filled to 80% full this valve shuts off every single time. Should the fill pipe be disconnected or be damaged there is also a non return valve fitted inside our 80% shut off valve which automatically stops any release of gas.

    2)  We then have a separate gauge float which shows the gas level inside the tank on the external gauge.  We can supply a separate sender unit which then displays the level on a remote LED gauge, both items bought separately. Please note these floats and senders are not calibrated units, so they are a indication only.

    3) PRV, this is the pressure release valve. Should the pressure in the tank expand to 27 bar ( 378 psi) the valve will open and release the pressure in a very controlled manner. This will never release under any normal operation circumstances.

    4) Our gas outlet is of top notch quality. It is a manually operated unit which is turned to control the flow on or off of the gas vapour.  In this unit there is also a high quality automatic shut off valve, so should any pipe or regulator on the tank leak or come off, the tank will automatically turn its self off - every time!

So as you can see our valves are not just valves!

Inside our GAS IT tanks we also have extra safety devices in the form of Liquid Phase Separators © and Restrictors.  Inside the tank on the vapour out, there is a large Liquid Phase Separator snorkel which is capped off with a special shaped lid that limits the amount of liquid that can escape down it from the tank.  We have done extensive driving tests to make sure that you never experienced any liquid from leaving the gas tank.  Even our upright Red GAS IT Plus 4 hole bottles have separators built in.

Please see the pictures of the inside of the tank to see these built in Liquid Phase Separators ©

  • Refillable LPG Cylinders

So you would like to put refillable LPG cylinders in your Motorhome or Caravan but don't really know where to start? Then we can help.

Firstly there are two options you can either replace the bottles in your locker and connect into your existing system or you can mount and install under slung tanks much in the way the latest autosleepers do. Both kits will need a fill point fitted. This allows you to stay legal, as the important part is the the fill point has to be fixed.

    Fill Points

The most common fill point (and one that we recommend) is one that is fitted to the outside of the vehicle, a 70mm round housing would be fitted with the the fill point inside it. The fill point is identical to those that are fitted on cars and allows you to fill them up at garages across the UK (or Europe with adaptors). For those that do not wish to make modifications to bodywork we can provide an "In Locker Kit" in which a fill point is mounted onto a surface in the locker itself. The fill point then connects to the cylinders via fast fill hose.

    Locker Kits

If you go for a locker kit, then you can choose to either have 1 bottle or 2, both can be refillable or just one. So you could have 1 refillable bottle and 1 non refillable one, connected to the same system. If you fit an auto changeover you can get your system to use the refillable one first and when empty switch over to your non refillable bottle. We do our standard Gas IT bottles in 6kg and 11kg sizes and our premium 4 hole Gas IT bottles in 6kg, 13kg and 21kg sizes.

These kits will connect to your existing regulators or you can upgrade your regulator at the same time to include auto changeovers etc.

    Underslung Kits

If you want the advantage of freeing up your locker or want to carry larger amounts of LPG then you can mount one of our Gas IT horizontal tanks. These are available in sizes from 20L to 116L. These have to be mounted horizontally on the vehicle, you can use your own mounting frame, or we supply ones to fit each size of tank. They use the same fill points as our other systems and connect to your existing regulator.

  • Sail and Trail and The Calor Van

If you have spotted the Calor Van recently on its travels you may have seen that it has a neat little generator supplied with it, powered by LPG.

This was a gas conversion of a Kipor IG 2000 that was done by us.

The Calorvan will be travelling the country and visiting many shows promoting the use of Calor gas.

If you are interested in LPG conversions for generators you can either speak to us or even ask the people on the Calorvan who should have some of our information for you.

  • Portable Petrol Generators Vs Portable Gas LPG Generators

Liquid Petroleum Gas, or LPG for short, is commonly found in the red bottles by Calor and used for BBQ’s, Caravans and Motorhomes. Almost all gas conversions in the UK use LPG as oppose to Butane (which is the blue bottles). It is possible to use Butane although different jets are required.

There has been a recent development in LPG conversion kits for generators as people look to move away from petrol and diesel as fuel sources. Some camping and caravan sites are starting to ban any petrol on sites for safety reasons. Some UK councils have stated that catering vans or exhibitors at events must only use LPG.

The conversion is achieved by using an aluminium collar that sits between the air filter and the carburettor. This allows the carburettor to remain unchanged so it is still capable of running petrol if it is ever needed. Due to the added thickness of the collar longer carburettor mounting studs are used.

    Benefits of LPG:

The biggest attraction of LPG is the lower running costs (bottled gas is about 30% - 50% cheaper to run currently than petrol, the larger the cylinder the cheaper the gas becomes). As fuel becomes more expensive this becomes and attractive offer.

You have greater flexibility in regards to extending the running time, just use a bigger cylinder if you need a longer running time; you are no longer limited by the internal fuel tank.

Cleaner emissions allows for use in situations where petrol is not appropriate such as around food or on those sites that do not allow petrol for fire risk precautions. There are also no petrol storage problems, eg. Smells.

Minimal risk of fuel spillage, as the fuel is not “loose” also there is less chance of the fuel source being stolen.

Lower maintenance costs due to cleaner running; petrol decays over time and can block the carburettor or hinder its operation. LPG does not have this problem as the LPG is sealed there is no chance of degradation. This leads to extended life of the spark plug and generator components.

A lot easier to refuel just connect up a new bottle. With more and more councils and campsites taking a disliking to petrol and diesel we feel that the demand of LPG generators will only increase in the future.

Sail and Trail offer LPG generators for just about every situation and requirement
